It’s not a big post, but it’s a good one

I’ve been down with a migraine since tuesday… which especially sucks because I’m working overtime this week so I can be off friday so my work days are extra long. I basically come home from work, eat, have a bath, and go to bed at like 9 because I’m so tired from the migraine. Hopefully it goes away today.

Tuesday we got more snow. More snow than ice this time! While I did have the option to stay home and use a vacation day, I decided to trek on in, because I really want to be off FRIDAY. And it’s been ridiculously cold so it didn’t go anywhere but mostly just turned to ice overnight, so yesterday was pretty hairy, too.

Dad sent me this pic of their yard:

And mom sent me this one of Kes in the backyard:

Thankfully it’s warming back up this weekend and hopefully all this stuff melts. Supposed to get back up into the 60s on Sunday.
I really think winter should just end right after New Year’s.

But anyway EXCITING stuff…. I got 2 shipments of fabric this week.
The first wasn’t all that interesting, but it was personally exciting. When I was making Bespin Leia last year, I ended up making 3 yokes and I wasn’t happy with any of them, I stopped at #3 because by that point I was totally out of fabric and it was passable. I had tried to go order more of the fabric, but by then it was out of stock and marked “NO” for restocking. (I’d had for a year before I started actually embroidering so no big surprise). Chase even called them for me to double check that they were totally 100% out of it and that they were really never getting anymore in… and they said yep it’s all gone.

So a couple of weeks ago, I was on my phone looking for another fabric and out of curiousity I just typed in the name/colour of the fabric on google. And guess what the first thing that popped up was? The store had 2 YARDS of it back in stock. I’m going to guess it was a return or they found 2 yards in a corner somewhere. I snapped it up.
Funnily enough it didn’t come up if I searched for it on the actual site. Only if I searched through google. I kinda thought maybe it was a mistake, and kept expecting an email saying “We’re sorry, but…” But it showed up on Tuesday.

So now I have a couple of extra yards of both the robe fabric and the tunic fabric. The sleeve seam on the tunic started to separate at MCFC, and while I think it’s fixable, I went ahead and bought another couple of yards in case I need to remake the sleeve totally, so I have back up fabric. And now I have more fabric to remake the yoke if I want to.

Anyway, I did say I got TWO fabric shipments this week, and the really exciting one was yesterday.

I got 2 bolts of this stuff yesterday and OMG it is so heavy! I almost fell over picking the box up because I didn’t expect it to be that heavy.
So now that I’ve committed by buying fabric, I’ve committed to the Queen Amidala I’m going to make this year – the black Coruscant gown.

I’d been planning on doing the Senate Kimono. I loooove that one, been wanting to do it for a while and I wanted to try to get to it this year. But then, I kinda fell in love with the Black Coruscant, too… it’s not as flashy right off the bat but it has a lot of beautiful details. And I love that it’s the inverse of the Corde costume I already made, I think it would be fun to have both in my closet.

So I was torn between the two.. and in the end it really came down to budget. We’re trying to save to buy a new house this year, and Black Coruscant would be much cheaper to do than the Senate Kimono.

So I got 10 yards of this minky black fabric. They sent them on the bolt and look how they packaged the bolts in the box:

LOL

I need to take it out tonight and drape it on the dressform and see if it’s going to need a full lining or I can just get away with a facing/sleeve lining. I think it may need the structure of a lining, got to see. If it does I’m running out tomorrow to pick some up.

I’ve also been hunting for fabric for the underdress – I thought it would be fairly easy to find. And I did find something that looks pretty close but it’s $20/yard and I REALLY don’t want to spend that much :\ I’ve been trying to find a more cost effective version but I’ve pretty much exhausted my online fabric resources. If I end up with the $20/yard stuff it’s going to be a big blow to the rest of my costume budget for the rest of the year. I did find one at $10/yard that I like ok. It’s not as close as the other stuff but maybe close enough and certainly more budget effective.

So, starting my “amidala black coruscant” tag today. Going to start planning out the appliques this weekend too… my favourite part!
